Negative pressure wound therapy has been used for over 3 decades to assist healing and improve outcomes in human healthcare. Its use in animal health has been more variable primarily due to the availability of systems and a lack of veterinary specific guidelines. NPWT tends to be thought of as a referral option, something that is challenging to use on challenging wounds, but that really isn't the case. Admittedly it's a bit of a change to the 'standard' approach but the benefits are definitely worth exploring. This paper from more than 20 years ago illustrates the value of NPWT in distal limb wounds. It's open source and worth a look. The devices, including ours, have become much more refined since then and our one to one clinical support means you're not left to work it out for yourself if you have a case that may be a good candidate.
The conference definitely seems to have started with us hitting the road through September sharing the love of wound healing and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with the faithful support of 'Demo Dave'; our trusted NPWT training hound!
Dave has been extremely well behaved all month helping us get hands on with delegates to help them a real feel for the role and application process of NPWT. Dave's passport was stamped in Belfast at the AVSPNI regional meeting hosted at the VSSco, in Birmingham while he had a sniff around at BEVA Congress and on the 23-24th of September he's been caught having a well earned nap during a quiet spell at VetCPD Congress. If you missed us at these events but keen to learn more we can arrange a call or 30 minute zoom meeting for your team covering the principles of NPWT and to hat would work for you. If you'd like something a bit more 'hands-on' and would like to meet Dave, we are happy to arrange a more in depth team CPD tailored to your practice type. Georgie is always happy to help and loves a chat! Getting patients back on their feet, with a functional repair as quickly as possible with minimal interventions is what great surgery is all about! While NPWT is often considered for wound bed preparation prior to surgical reconstruction, it is also a great modality to use to support graft take.
